The level of umpiring has been poor in the Indian Premier League 2024.
The umpires have given controversial decisions in several matches. In the latest IPL 2024 match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, the visitors lost the match because of the two questionable calls by the umpires.
Sanju Samson was given out by the third umpire despite Shai Hope appeared to have touch the boundary rope with the ball in his hand. Samson played a big stroke towards the long on area but was caught by the West Indies player. The on-field umpires were not sure about the legality of the catch and they decided to take the help of the third umpire.
The TV umpire was in hurry and gave the decision in favour of Delhi without checking the catch from different angles.
Samson was not satisfied and had a word with the on-field officials before heading back to the dugout. He wanted to take DRS against the call but was informed that rules don’t permit that.
Former players Zaheer Khan and Suresh Raina lambasted the officials.
“This decision changed the momentum of the game in Delhi’s favour. The TV umpire should have taken time before making a call. It looked like the foot of the fielder had touched the boundary rope. It was a close call and the official should have checked it from different angles,” Zaheer Khan said.
Suresh Raina also slammed the umpire. “He didn’t use different angles to come to a conclusion. Such calls need time but the TV umpire didn’t follow the right procedure,” Suresh Raina said.
Zaheer and Raina also came down heavily on the officials for not declaring a delivery wide despise it pitching outside the tram line. The incident happened on the last ball of the 19th of Rajasthan’s chase.
Rasikh Salam bowled a wide delivery but the on-field didn’t raise his arms. Rovman Powell took a DRS and surprisingly the third official took a long time before informing the on-field umpire to stay with his decision.
Chasing 222 runs, the Royals managed 201, falling short by 20 runs.
